As you circle the vineyard, you’ll notice on your right a small quarry. All early stone buildings on the property were built with local stone, the majority of which was excavated from three on-site quarries. This was laborious and dangerous work, and sadly, Brother George Sadler SJ lost his life in 1865 when he was struck on the head by blasted rubble while excavating stone for Saint Aloysius Church.
Please do not walk into the quarry. While the site is now decommissioned, the site has in the past been a working mine, and loose fragments of rock may still pose danger.
Slate was first mined in the Clare Valley during the early 1850s, with the Mintaro Slate Quarry opening in 1854. Still in operation today, it remains Australia's oldest operating Slate Quarry - and is only just over the hill from Sevenhill!
To go to Site 8: St Ignatius Shrine, continue along the path, and once past the fence, take the right-hand path up the hill towards the Shrine.
